Umniah Participates in Naseej’s Regional Meeting ‘Weaving the Threads’ and Shares Its Experience in Social Responsibility

Amman, August 2010 – Umniah announced its participation in the three-day Naseej Program Regional Meeting entitled, ‘Weaving the Threads,’ that was held at the Dead Sea Marriott Hotel. The event was inaugurated by H.E. the Minister of Social Development Ms. Hala Bseiso Latouf, and brought together representatives from different civil society pillars including non-governmental organizations from different sectors, relevant governmental bodies, international NGOs and donors, private sector representatives, researchers and research institutions, and media entities.

The event served as a forum for shared learning, networking and communication between and amongst the relevant and concerned stakeholders in Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Palestine and Egypt. It also aimed specifically at taking an in-depth look at and presenting other stakeholders perspectives on the conditions of civil society’s working environment, work and impact based on actual experiences of a group of active non-governmental entities. In addition, the regional meeting strove to bridge the stakeholders’ perspectives on, and understanding of, the Arab Civil Society’s conditions, and develop a plan of action that would improve current practices and enhance relevant policies in the near future.

Umniah’s participation in this conference confirms its belonging to its community and Jordan’s youth in particular, and reflects the company’s pride in partnering with leading civil society institutions that implement meaningful and constructive initiatives. As part of Umniah’s involvement in the conference, Ms. Nicole Shahin, Corporate Communications Supervisor at Umniah, conducted a presentation during a discussion panel, outlining Umniah’s activities since its establishment in 2005 in the Jordanian telecom market. The presentation highlighted the company’s achievements and regionally-unprecedented services, as well as its new slogan launched earlier this year to reflect Umniah’s corporate identity and directions.

Whilst elaborating on Umniah’s philosophy on corporate social responsibility, Ms. Shahin identified CSR as “taking the initiative to benefit society in a manner that creates sustainable long-term positive impact,” and stimulating positive change without using CSR as a promotional tool. She also explained that the support Umniah provides to the community is not limited to financial aid, but that it also includes training opportunities for community members to empower them to effectively capitalize on their capabilities and resources. Umniah also works to raise society’s awareness on how to fully take advantage of the support it offers them. In addition, Ms. Shahin expressed Umniah’s belief in the importance of directly engaging its team in CSR initiatives and having them closely interact with the society to identify the community’s needs and feedback, and to communicate Umniah’s sincere interest in playing a positive role in social development.

In turn, Ms. Hania Aswad, the Regional Chief of Party of the Naseej Program, thanked Umniah for its active engagement in the conference, commending the company’s ongoing CSR initiatives and programs that yield tangible benefits for various social segments. Ms. Aswad also called upon all institutions and companies to follow Umniah’s example and adopt socially responsible practices that benefit society and the Kingdom as a whole.
